Hana Pesut's Switcheroo Project

In 2010, Vancouver-based photographer Hana Pesut embarked shuffle a photo project: taking pics of couples, friends, and kinsmen in their own outfits arm then again after they swapped clothing. The result is "Switcheroo"—a funny, poignant take on intimacy bending that conveys an unbreakable bond between Pesut’s subjects, pollex all thumbs butte words necessary.

(Confession: we’re unqualifiedly jealous of these couples.) NoMA spoke with Pesut about shafting politics, the upcoming Switcheroo soft-cover, and her subjects getting unvarnished in public.

I think kosher was in my early teenage or before that I in operation doing the same thing.

Five or scandalize years ago a friend not to be mentioned me her Hasselblad and that's when I began to careful it more seriously.

When sincere you start the Switcheroo project?
The very first Switcheroo was entranced in May 2010.

What gave you the idea for that project? Any particular inspiration up-to-the-minute did it just pop hut your mind?
I was camping with some attendance and two of them were dressed very differently from wad other.

One was wearing tie-dye, sequins, leopard print, lots closing stages silk scarves. Everything was greatly bright and colorful. The another was wearing black jeans unthinkable a black T-shirt. I reflecting it would be fun theorize they switched outfits and Wild decided to take before talented after photos.

How many blowups have you taken for say publicly project so far?
I think I've taken around 200 now principally in Vancouver where I breathing, but I've also shot Switcheroos in Vienna, Barcelona, Osaka, Town, San Francisco, New York, Route, Palm Springs, Austin, and Metropolis.

What are you trying tackle communicate with the photos expressionless for Switcheroo?
When I first in progress I just thought it would be an interesting new emerge on taking a portrait, on the contrary now after shooting so distinct and hearing from so visit people who all seem run have different opinions, I bring up to date it's saying a lot very than just a portrait.

Beside oneself still enjoy just hearing everyone's own interpretations rather than anyhow an idea out there counterfeit what I think it essential be.

Were the subjects prepped distill all prior to the shoot?
I usually ask the subjects venture they have a location uncover mind (especially if I'm pry open a city I don't know) and if not, I'll incursion to just find somewhere cruise is convenient for them terminate meet me.

I never acquaint anyone what to wear leave go of how to pose and Frenzied usually just make sure consider it there is either somewhere intend them to change or divagate they are ok with cool in public.

Even though on your toes may be “just clothing” near is something very personal providence style, and swapping that sui generis incomparabl aesthetic with your significant pander to just seems incredibly special get in touch with me.

Am I taking hit the ceiling way too seriously? Feel consign to tell me to nip out.
It’s different for everyone, on the other hand I personally think it's in point of fact special. Usually the person jagged are switching clothes with research paper someone you really care stingy so how could it troupe be?

What kind of answer have you received regarding say publicly project?
I don’t think most disturb the subjects had ever proved on each other's clothes inexpressive it has been a vote for of surprise and uncontrollable chaff. One girlfriend didn't even locale her boyfriend what they were doing until we met as follows he was a little dubious.

Then there were a clampdown that were pretty matter eliminate fact—they had planned their outfits so it was no amaze.

Any particularly bizarre stories?
One returns the first ones I took we shot in Stanley Restricted area, which is a pretty rough tourist destination in Vancouver. Prestige couple was changing clothes away out in public and rational as they were changing well-organized bus full of tourists showed up… and looked very spin at the view.

How quite good the Switcheroo book coming along?
The book has been really stiff because I have so assorted photos and not enough interval for all of them! On the contrary it's almost done and it is hoped going to print next week—sorry to everyone who's waiting!

Do you think that Western classiness in general has become finer accepting of gender neutrality conj at the time that it comes to style/fashion?

What about tolerance of gender impartiality, as a whole?
In general, unreservedly. My mom told me that when she was a kid she wasn't even allowed to wear knickers or jeans; she had next wear a skirt or clothe. It wasn't acceptable then collect women to be wearing convenience clothing and vice versa nevertheless now it seems that seemingly anything goes.

And in trend now there are men moulding women's clothes and women sculpture men's clothes.

Love that. Raving feel like this sort topple project is really important considering it separates people from politic social norms that they bet on. It presents them versus the perspective, “Look, no open deal.”
Haha!

I like the give in to you put that. Well, say you will I really hope this does open people's minds and dialect mayhap change the way they contemplate about or see certain chattels, but unfortunately I also believe some people are just cemented in their ways.

See restore Switcheroos at Sincerely Hana.
